Despite growing up in Mexico during the 1980s, this interviewee recounts how there was also a wave of conservatism during that time, and how homosexuality was shunned. When he came to America in the 2000s and finally came out as gay, he still had these childhood ideals of masculinity in mind, particularly in relation to the stigma of AIDS. Only when he met people who were HIV+, then could he work to eliminate biases. Doing so through reading fiction and nonfiction about queer history and AIDS, he understands that the epidemic is being lost to time, and implores people to learn about their 'ancestors.'
