As a result of his medical training pre-AIDS epidemic, this interviewee talks his job training other policemen and firefighters on universal precautions and AIDS education during the pandemic. He recounts how, due to the confusion surrounding HIV/AIDS, people refused to shake hands with gay men because they were afraid of getting it; they thought of it as a 'gay disease.' He notes that this behavior was not malicious, though. They acted in this way out of fear, and so, it was his job to educate them on how to protect themselves whilst also dispelling misconceptions and promoting compassion.
